Melbourne Jan 2009 :)

We couldn't choose a worst time to come. Melbourne experience the worst ever heatwave :S Temperatures in Victoria topped 43 degrees Celsius for a record-breaking third consecutive day!! Goodness...

Melbourne city prior to the heatwave

I kinda like the look of this man's suit. Reminded me of the 50's classic look.. :P

Crown Casino

Chinese new year deco at the casino :)

We went outside to watch the 5 minutes fire performance. We could feel the heat from far!

Spanish Donuts at Victoria Market

Why have our normal donuts when we can have Spanish donuts! Superb!! I'm sure this will be a hit if they ever come to Singapore!!

Constant flow of customers getting their cure for sweet tooth.. :D

Australian open 2009!

We managed to catch one of the Australian open match! so exciting! all the while, we can only watch from tv. to be able to watch it live is really a dream come true :D

waiting for the tram to bring us to the Rod Laver Arena.

Huge Crowd watching the match from outside the arena. Ground pass is much cheaper. They are watching from the huge projector screen

Ads :D so exciting to be here at Rod Laver Arena!!

Look at the crowd there! fantastic mood. 4th round women's singles - Jelena Jankovic vs Marion Bartoli. Jelena being Australian is naturally the hot fav. She won the match but later lose to Safina during the quarter final.

4th round of men's singles, Marcos Baghdatis vs Novak Djokovic. Djokovic won but sadly he had to withdraw at quarter final due to injury.. some guessing that it is heat related. So unfortunate.

Evening view from our apartment

Australian Day cum CNY!!

Temperature rose to 38 deg on this day. the start of the scary heatwave

Not much photos taken as we decided to do some shopping.. haha.. so camera is kept in the bag most of the time.. haha

Spotted some police along the way, to manage thehuge crowd out to celebrate Australian day. It happened to be the first day of CNY as well :D

On the way to NGV

the wall at the Art Centre. Pretty nostalgic :D

Along Yarra river

Tennis open banner everywhere.. :D Hot just like the scorching heat.. haha

Ian Potter Gallery

At Ian Potter NGV and it's FREE!! HAHA.. one of the reason i love Melbourne!! lol

According to the curator, this piece of aboriginal art cost Aus2.5 million!! he jokingly tell us that each dots cost a dollar.. lol

Aboriginal batik, and i thought that we only have malay batik. so interesting!

See how nice is the portrait. It's portrait of Ian Brown, art collector and one of the major contributor of the gallery

Another interesting artwork. In the background is the artwork titled 'Somewhere in France'. The artist received the manuscript written by her grandfather on the suffering of war. It inspired her to create this combining the text from the manuscript.

this car is nice.. i forgot to take the pix of the description.. :P

a photo exhibition 'No standing only dancing'.

Dockland

we went to Dockland to shop. But it's kinda empty there.. haha

They have the huge ferries wheel just like a lot of other countries (London, Singapore etc). Do we see a global trend here? haha.. a must have in all major cities? :P

We saw this interesting ads of maybe a new hair salon. it's made from a lot of combs.. it's a pity a lot of the combs went missing.. haha

Day tour to Philip Island in scorching heat

we booked a day tour to Philip Island. I was quite reluctant to go out in the scorching 40+++ deg heat.

While waiting for the tour bus, I took photo of the town hall

Town hall window

Another view of the town hall

On the way to the island, we stopped over at a farm to visit some of the animals. My camera was burning hot after a few minutes. So scary. We got baked even in shades.

wallaby. Btw, how do we differenciate wallaby and kangaroo?? they looked the same to me.. haha

Feeding the wallabies

Little pony? I think.. haha..

After that, our driver cum guide took us to a beach. We are supposed to stop here for one hour.. The angmohs are thrilled. I can't say the same for us.. haha.. we hid at the shade and view the beach from far. I can't figure out how they can manage to walk to the beach in such scorching heat. :S

Our view from the shade.. haha.. it's good enough for me.. i'm not that crazy to walk in such heat.. lol

At another stop at the Pyramid rock (thank goodness i took pix of most of the sign at all the stops. my brain couldn't function well after being fried by the heat for so long :P)

At nobbies centre to view penguin burrow. We are not allowed to take pix at the penguin parade, so this is a good chance to take pix of the burrow and guess wat? We spotted the bb penguin!! so happy..! it looks so cute!!

See how many shadows surrounding the bb penguin.. haha.. the bb is so brave! totally undaunted with the crowd!

walking along the boardwalk at nobbies centre

another cute bb penguin! so fluffy.. lol

Seagull .. admiring the view? lol

The boardwalk, we could see penguin burrow along the way

The end of the walk, we gotta turn back at this point

Day 3 of 43 Deg heatwave

We practically got baked in the tram at 43 deg. Luckily it's just 3 tram stop away to the art gallery. Still, it's horrendous.. :S

National Gallery of Victoria (NGV International)

Day 3 of crazy scorching 43-45 deg in Melbourne. We decided to go to the NGV to avoid the heat. Even a short walk to the tram stop and walking to the NGV proof torturing :S We were so so happy to enjoy the aircon at NGV after the struggle to reach there. Luckily it's just 3 tram stop from our apartment.

Andy Warhol's chicken n' dumplings. i'm sure many are wondering what's with can soup and art.. :P Apparently it was a shock to many when Andy Warhol uses everyday subject as work of art

one of the 14 sculptures based on a dance drama, Sail the Midnight Sun.

Papua New Guinea mask

The Maori people make figures of their ancestor

Chicomecoatl, goddess of rice maize. Their status looks nice :)

A decoration from a tomb found in Egypt

Colorful roof at the NGV

Portion of an Indian temple

I love the european painting at the NGV!! And the best part? The visit is FREE!!! Why can't we have free entry in Singapore?? That would encourage people to enjoy art as it should be.

See how huge some of the painting are! Very impressive display

another perspective of the amazing collection

Some kids taking shot at the NGV entrance. Good thing we came early. The place started to get crowded at late noon
